WHAT IT IS LIKE TO PEEL JOHN PARK
It is one of those things, to get to know a painter through his or her work, but it is a whole other thing to get to know them outside of what they create. John Park, himself, is bold, gifted, and wise; a true complement to what he applies to chosen canvas. "We are the vampires of the world." Park says, with hope, in regards to the States. "... we've lost track of the notion that the pursuit of happiness should involve the greater good instead of self-indulgence." With those words he lit a fire inside of me. I wanted to dig deeper into his humanistic side and see beyond his painted layers.

Born into a traditional Korean family in Columbus, Ohio, Park says, he could have been expected to become a lawyer or doctor; most anything but not an artist. As most boys do he envisioned himself a fireman, navel seal, or a deadly ninja. "If ninja existed as a career I wanted to be that." he stated with a mischievous grin. I saw a child-like sensibility pass through him for an instant.
Since he knew he wanted to become neither doctor or lawyer he considered the marines but he had been creating art since he was knee high and through his recreation of Calvin and Hobbes expressed his longing to continue on that journey. At the mere mention, by a family friend, of a prestigious art college in Rhode Island and the support of a father, who's own natural artistic talent was squashed, he was given carte blanche to dive into a creative future. His love for the greats helped to inspire and teach him, when painting, to do an accurate representation then to stylize. "To stylize something is much much harder then to do an accurate representation." He mentioned once he had figured out how to recreate a scene it gave him the foundation he needed to create something of his own.

His own, years later, includes a huge concern about our society and where it is headed. The food we consume and the waste we accumulate. "We are in the most self-indulgent, entitled society thats ever existed on the planet and we continue our march towards our own extinction." Now in all of our history I find it hard to believe that we, Americans, are the worst but in looking at the waste in which we are creating by the minute and the levels of unconsciousness of the people sustained by our governing parties I would say he has a damn good point. He spoke about consumerism and the intelligence of pigs. With websites like TED he learned and explored how human beings remember experiences.
Park's thirst for understanding is met by his passion of humanity. It had become more and more clear as we continued our interview that this inspiration ran deeply through him. Gorillas in masks.
"America started off as whats called a share holder, a steak holder nation. Everyone of its citizens felt like they had a steak in what was happening to the country and where the country was going." He and I both looked at each other with the realization that we no longer live in a country with that belief system. Maybe a bit scary.

Perhaps there are many answers to change; towards a truly sustaining or long-term society. Park's contribution is not only the messages he incorporates into his work but a nature based in seeking truths and resolutions by being curious and proactive.

And incase you are interested in making John some yummy food in the near future. Here's a little help. His favorites are
1. Unnamed Korean soups
2. Pork ribs (until he recently stopped eating pork)
3. In and Out
4. Veggies
5. Raw milk
But be warned. He is making forward motion towards a healthier, more conscience set of eating habits. Nice!!!
There are some things that even the most daring wrestlers in the competitive /entertainment circuit will not venture into. We know they aren't afraid of tight pants (which accentuates their girlish figures), cheesy shticks, and/or tacky stage names. Painful items like rat traps, barbed wire, staple guns, and glass are some of the items that they usually avoid. But in the case of wrestler Supreme while the others run he turns around and embraces it head on; literally. It's a good thing his wife is a nurse! For years he has been challenging his opponents in Death Matches; making sure that lots of blood is shed and titles are won.
Can you imagine having to keep track of all the music that gets sent to KCRW? Trust me when I say it looks overwhelming. But according to Eric J Lawrence, KCRW's music librarian, it's a dream job. A hobby on steroids. Here's a man who wanted to be an English professor and instead hangs out down in a basement with one of the most amazing music collections in town. His job is to keep it organized. Little does anyone know (except his family) Eric was featured on Solid Gold, a gloriously cheeky disco TV show , lip syncing to Joe Dolce's "Shaddup You Face" with his father when he was thirteen years old. Simply this; if it wasn't for the men and woman behind the curtain there wouldn't be a wizard of OZ or Pop Culture in this case. When he's not daydreaming about taking a trip to visit Iceland, Eric's job is to help new music find its audience. His brain seems to have the same layout as an encyclopedia. Or perhaps a crammed but well-organized storage space, with shelves, drawers, and boxes of music all stacked ceiling high. After a bit of probing I found out the organization of languages keeps him guessing. After three years of high school Russian and a bit of college the one phrase he remembers translates to "you're stupid" in English. (Nice!) In his down, Eric is working on a project that involves reviewing every record made in 1977. Naturally, he calls his project "Every Record From 1977" Oh, and he's also the Sunday night DJ at KCRW (89.9FM). In case you're curious, Eric says one of his favorite bands is The Fall and he has a thing for English edibles (Actually, I could tell that just by looking around the room). Other well-known photographers like Richard Avedon, Lucas Samaras, and Robert Mapplethorpe have used this form to push boundaries, entertain, and create art. One that should not be so easily disposed of; especially during difficult times. This process is not without its flaws, however. For one, the film costs more than $3 per image (for Spectra). Two, the quality doesn't seem to be the same. But life is full of changes. Despite these roadblocks, The Impossible Project has aided in the fight to recapture the pleasure that Land's Polaroid gave the world. The I. P. and Fuji have made the world a happy place again especially if you have the money to spend on film.
Pop Culture Taxi and Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02718951703794121342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34657162.post-55275205492962087472012-02-03T13:31:00.000-08:002012-02-07T14:40:28.035-08:00Good Ear Candy: Gotye
<a 1em;"="" 1em;="" clear:="" float:="" href="http://www.popculturetaxi.blogspot.com/2012/02/good-ear-candy.html" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
GOTYE
Last night, at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles, Wouter De Backer, better know as Gotye, walked out on stage and proved to the many fans anxiously awaiting the show that he had amazing musical prowess. His enthusiasm and skills translated relentlessly and his appreciation for odd instruments schooled an ignorant ear. Despite an absent Kimbra, he implored the audience's help. Without hesitation, they gladly complied: nearly every woman in that theatre sang along to "Someone That I Used To Know" (and quite a few men, too). It was amazing.
The men who joined him on stage seemed to be having fun, strangely, there was a strong air of camaraderie between them; at least that was the feeling I got. As a two year old runs to the door in greeting, her father, Sapp, walks out of his workshop with a big smile. His trademark mohawk is relaxed and his demeanor soft; visually unmistakable punk. His family background is in vintage film posters and memorabilia, but he has a huge affinity for toys-- especially those of the Zombie nature. His love for World War II history and tiny soldiers has given him his niche in the art world. And, contrary to rumors of a quiet and shy nature, he has a lot to say-- whether it is about politics "I miss my country" or about the loss of his brother. He's the sweet sensitive kind.

While talking about his brother, before he mentioned his premature death, I could tell that Sapp revered him. You can usually tell a person's character by how they talk about the people in their lives. The little bits of criticism he mentioned stemmed more from a caring, constructive point-of-you than that of a harsh critic. His thoughts varied from one subject to the next and were playful, accented by humor. Tucked away in the depths of his garage a world of plastic figurines waited for someone's attention. It looked like a scene out of Toy Story but created by Shinji Mikami and directed by Rob Zombie.

He makes small and large miniature scaled worlds and one is never without a story; a lesson he learned recently. He frequently mentioned his use of toy conversion kits and soldier figurines while explaining his detailed pieces. Though his modesty gets the better of him, it is apparent that the detailed work he does is well beyond average ability. I even checked to see if he has small hands (keep your minds out of the gutter) because I couldn't image anyone with fat fingers creating the kind of intricate work he does. "I use tweezers a lot."
In his bookshelf sits an odd version of the Holy Bible Red Letter Edition; it was a Masonic Cyclopedic Indexed. What the hell? I'm curious.
He admits to being an overly protective father and BTW he's really bad at keeping secrets.
Per his recommendation if he suddenly was to shut up and become secretive, that would indicate a problem. "It would be abnormal to my character."
Currently Sapp's show "When A Good Man Goes To War" is present at the La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Hollywood, Ca.
Perhaps the personality of photographer Gerald Slota is as obscure as most of his work: defined by games of hide and seek. Or maybe its the other way around, he seeks then hides. Behind his blue eyes a web of stories stay buried and occasionally, in the cracks of his smile, they start to slowly unfold: his love for the film Harold and Maude. His approach to giving his company just enough of himself then leaving them to their own interpretations is just how far he's willing to go. The approach works. Home.Sweet.Home, a show by Slota and Neil LaBute, has a strong enigmatic effect.

The desire to get closer, to even walk into them, is alluring but aided by LaBute's words make the show incredibly disturbing. The kind of disturbing you don't look away from but pity others who have experienced such realities.
I wondered what this artist wanted to be when he grew up. His response, "To be grown up." The next question was more obvious, "Is this what your dreams look like?" "No, but I get a lot of my ideas from them." I didn't know what to say; I just quietly wondered more.
had an interesting idea; Radiohead's Bends album from the point of you of string instruments, their string instruments. Radiohead has been a vary popular band for the past 10 years with song such as Karma Police, Creep, and Just. That's a BIG responsibility for any band to take on. HUGE! Let alone 3 violinists and a cello player playing at The Broad Stage in Santa Monica. But it is not the first time this quartet has taken on such heavy tasks. They have performed their version's of Coldplay's Yello, The Postal Service's Such Great Heights, and Muse's Time Is Running Out.
When listening to an instrumental version of the Bends it was easy to close my eyes and get swept away by their translation. It made me wish, at that moment, I was intertwined with a passionate lover.
It is not hard to understand why so many people adore Radiohead but ask a violin player to play their songs, the ones that they are aroused by, and Radiohead takes on a new dimension.
At that moment I decided there is nothing more intoxicating than Radiohead on violin.
This phenomenon could be because the burger is rich with flavor or because they are the perfect size but regardless be prepared to have a craving soon afterwards. Mine happened in my sleep. This place is not for vegetarians or vegans so don't even consider it. The place smells like fabulous well prepared animal. And not only does the place attract fun crazy hipsters but nice normal people too. Yummy!
The word reflects the goal of the chef. The term Umami means "a pleasant savoury taste imparted by glutamate, a type of amino acid, and ribonucleotides, including inosinate and guanylate, which occur naturally in many foods including meat, fish, vegetables, and dairy products." In plain English it is the fifth primary taste that occurs after sweet, sour, salt, and bitter; as explained to customers Zoey and Sheila by the GM Randall and staff member Tracey.
Then after the burger comes dessert! Ice cream sandwiches made by the chiefs at MILK. OMG!!!
With so many artists in the Los Angeles area, inspiration for art can be challenging but not so challenging that one would look past an artist who isn't afraid to work in his own blood. Mr. Kushner does not fain at the sight of his own blood nor does he become light headed as he makes the cut. With pride and purpose he carves into himself, as the audience flinches, to sign a sold piece of work while its new owner stands close by. The dark presence of Marilyn Manson, spinning his new album Born Villain, and Rudy Coby, a professional magician, solidifies his influence as seriously bizarre.
1. His middle name is Eugenius
His parents supported the idea of him becoming an artist and he seemed to have a knack for it.
He always felt better after a "good session of art," which happened to be "the only subject in school he whole heartedly enjoyed." And he chose cats because of their eyes.
celebrated its 11th birthday on sat evening in a hotbox on Maple Ave, downtown. This event pioneered the model of taking chances, introducing, and supporting new artists trying to reach professional levels in the art community of LA while simultaneously including a variety of wildly entertaining live performances. One piece of this particular show almost made me sick (for about 5 secs) when one of the performance groups attached large chains to back piercings and pulled. Thank god the art was pleasing and the DJ sets were good because it never came to fruition.
While Garman goes on about their guest host, who's ass barks, Smith used Matt Damon and Ben Affleck instead of a normal scale system in determining rates of good vs bad; good=Damon and bad=Affleck. When asked which one of his favorite movies he'd remake and with which actors, he said he'd remake Jaws with Affleck as the shark. Ouch! He wasn't interested in taking prisoners.
"Necessity is the mother of invention" hence the campy drawings. It was a bit hard to get a one-on-one interview with photos of the project sense both men were very busy but trust me I tried.
In just a few short days they had guests that ranged from Alanis Morissette to Knocked Up's Seth Rogan and a hot number covered in tattoos who cooked a mean dessert in less then 5 minutes. He had "snow" and "dirt" everywhere. It even made it into Smiths mouth.
John Goodman, also a guest on the show, exchanged uncomfortable laughs with Smith while trying to stay on his bar stool before he quickly rushed off.
The show received a few stomach clenching laughs from the fans in the audience. They seemed to be having a good time. The crew maintained their interest and high hopes in the project as the pilots continued and though I can not imagine that Kevin Smith is really done with making movies it is very apparent that the new direction he and his partner have embarked on is a direction that they both feel passionate about. Lets see if their prospect money bags feel the same.Pop Culture Taxi and Maxwellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02718951703794121342noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-34657162.post-71351377780421055802011-08-07T19:54:00.000-07:002011-08-08T10:26:24.233-07:00Another Film Festival With 2 Sets of Wheels And A Taste For Speed
<a href=http://popculturetaxi.blogspot.com/2011/08/another-film-festival-with-2-sets-of.html#more

There is nothing truly more attractive then a hot man on a vintage bike, the kind with an engine and an exhaust system. But there has to be more than just attraction: an intoxicating rush of adrenaline. I'm sure bike-lovers Tom Laughlin, Ewan McGregor, David Beckham understand this or, at least, have experienced it. They join many others in the world including the attendees of the LA Moto Film Fest in sharing a huge appreciation and respect for what these 2 wheel vehicles can do and trust me they can do a lot! I have a few scars to prove it.
The two best films were the first short shown and the Taiwanese short "Dream Rangers". A few of the other came across as a bit self indulgent.
The Cretins Clubhouse downtown played hostess-with-the-mostest supplying food and inexpensive cocktails along with merch and music adding to the entertainment. Unfortunately their lighting of the surround eye candy (motorbikes, get your mind out of the gutter) was less than desirable. How does one see a bike in the dark? That is a mistake no rider should ever make.

Throughout the evening bikes and their riders came up the ramp in groups or singly adding themselves to the growing display of machinery.
It was an impressive sight up against the LA City downtown skyline even without the lights.
lighting scientist and photographer spent the weekend in Los Angeles teaching others how to recreate Hollywood style lighting. Here is a man who knows what he is talking about because of his up-close-and-personal babysitter: the film industry ala noir. He grew up watching films like Chinatown while his father made a living as a still photographer on sets where as a child he would frequently play. His interpretation of photography is a sexy vintage Stradivarius mixed with a 1960's sense of freedom. The whole time, he makes it look painless; absolutely painless.
Over 125,000 people, tons of cute kids, and a lot of B.O. packed into one place can make for a great summer weekend; if you're into the world of comics and gaming, which I am. Every year, around this same time, San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter crawls with many comic book characters and their supporters. They come from all over the world and in all sorts of shapes and sizes. The highly anticipated Con is a straight undiluted shot of ADHD; leaving absolutely no prisoners. Everywhere you turn something is strangling your attention; notice me, buy me, play with me
The convention is as much for adults as it is for the kids. Whatever your hearts desire, within the realm of adolescent imagination and fantasy where the good guys scale walls and the bad guys turn into giant monsters, it will be represented in heaps.
Booths, containing brands from Nickelodeon to Lions Gate, Dark Horse to DC, galleries to toy collectors line the rows introducing their products. You can see incredible statues of your favorite film characters and attend panels with directors and actors from the latest shows.
Saturday night Sketch Theatre and Baby Tattoo Books threw a party introducing their recent collaboration; a fascinating collection of various graphic artists who have all participated in the past in Sketch Theatre's video ventures. The videos consist of start to finish sketches done by great artists well regarded in their respective fields. The Gnomon Gallery hosted their art show for the evening while artists like Miss Mindy, Rick O'Brien,Van Arno, Aimée Kuester, and Marc Gabbana graced fans with their John Hancock's.
In one corner auction books, for the art, sat on a table being doused with wine while they filled up and in the back room artists sat haunched over their sketch pads while they put live models to paper. The book was for sale at a counter up front and a table outside became it's destination; there it would be written on, there It would be drawn on, there IT would be fondled by its comrades...
The 4th of July every year draws out the independence stick putting into the hands of children as they wave their sparklers high in the air. The same children who will never know that 20 years earlier their parents sat at these same beaches with more advanced pyrotechnics and the ability to have a bonfire while cooking BBQ and drinking a beer without the hassle or threat of jail time. Guess there must have been too many people blowing their arms off while holding onto an excessive amount of roman candles all at once.
The only solace: Venice Beach
When the crazy for French macarons started it is hard to say but over the course of the last few years restaurants, specialty stores, and grocery stores have started to carry these delectable delights. Pinks, blues, and many other colors followed by a flavorful assortment of creamy tastes are dropping into the mouths of many Americans redefining the idea of what a macaron (not macaroon) is. At first thought most taste buds salivate at the idea of coconut but are quickly redefining their assumptions with every bite but are they keeping up with French standards?
One parisian says "no"; wonder what the others would say...
This is just one experience of macaron possibilities that left an empty box and a sad prospect but the deciding factor: Does it melt in your mouth the second it hits your tongue?
Dangling from white nylon rope and tightly secured between two pieces of plexiglass technology hangs 51/2 ft above a cement floor at the Gallery Knibb, Venice. Who says we have to be practical! Why not a custom iPhone covered in bling or is this to hang on a wall? Warning: It's a sticky business. Cars, music, clothes and contests were just some of what inspired visitors to get their hands dirty. That just added the cherry to the top of this weekend's sundae. Artists and non-artists alike came and tried out their drawing chops leaving with pencil smudges and perhaps pieces of paper representing the fruits of their labor.
In the tattoo rooms the air was think with one word: permanent. There were men and women alike lying on beds, tables, chairs, or the floor in attempt to get comfortable while some tattoo junky works on their specified body part(s) sealing what will become a mostly permanent fate.
Other artists like the Pizz, who does not actually sling the ink, advertises a different form of art: temporary; right up my alley, then again, I suffer from commitment issues.
Other events included a tattoo competition, a Pin-up Model competition, and lots of live bands like the Buzzcocks and The Vandals. YAY:)
YES and IT'S A TRIP.
Art walks seem to be popping all over the place; downtown Los Angeles, Venice, you name an area and they'll most likely have one but if they don't they will shortly. The first Saturday of every month Santa Ana has their own art walk which, surprisingly, was much bigger than expected and definitely more interesting... Ran around looking at art with a drink in my hand while some good old southern food awaited my return.
Not far off and down a beautiful set of stairs more galleries opened up to inquisitive eyes. There was everything from wicked low-brow art installations and cans of spray paint to a live band. There was even ceramic sculptures my mother would have liked and many religious references used in some of the art.
Though much of the art created this Memorial Day weekend happened at Lightning in a Bottle I had the rare opportunity to create art photography with Desiree Siahaan. If you have yet to be introduced to her you should. "Desiree this is Pop Culture Taxi's family. Family this is Desiree."
You could say she's a professional actress (which she is) but in my book she's a professional actress with a strong dash of sweetheart... She kissed me on the cheek! Sooo cute.
Artistic expression comes easily to her. Perhaps it is her ability to look like many different ethnicities or her inherent sense of play but this Singaporean hottie has more fun than a five year old child at
Disneyland... definitely with more of the right kind of attitude.

So refreshing.

Check her out in Son of the Dragon and Marco Polo (with Ian Somerhalder from Vampire Diaries).... Netflix
